After a 3 hour flight that left New Caledonia at
1:15 in the morning, we arrived at dawn on Wallis Island...
the sleepiest little island you will ever find. In the
world of travellers we are alone. We're the only tourists
here. Because tourists are few and far between, the island
has only 3 hotels and 50 beds available at the best of times.
There is no public transport, not even a taxi, so if you want
to go somewhere, you either walk or rely on the locals to give
you a lift.
Like New Caledonia, Wallis is a French island and
French is the official language, although the native Wallisians
also speak a language with the same roots as Tongan. The
currency used is the Central Pacific Franc (CFP). Since
everything is imported, everything is expensive. The population
is about 12,500. There is a paved road, about 35 km in
length, that circumnavigates the island.
