Our first two weeks on the island of Borneo, were spent in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of the Sultanate of Brunei.  The formal name of the country is Negara Brunei Darussalam... the Malayan translation for Abode of Peace.

The current ruler, Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddulah, is the 29th member of his family to reign over Brunei since the 13th century.  Only a male is permitted to rule.

With a population of around 335,000, and a huge wealth accrued from the oil industry, Brunei is a modern country that enjoys one of the best lifestyles and highest standards of living in Asia.
