First, download Multi-Language Dictionary Download Manager (which downloads the rest); the program will ask what languages you want; specify at least Thai and English. You can also choose other languages. All the software, including Speak Easy Thai, is identical to what is available in the retail download and retail CD-ROM. |
However, the trial download includes only 2000 images and 1000 sound files and does NOT include the 350-page Thai grammar book. If you want, you can buy the hypertext Thai grammar e-book separately; that version of the grammar book is set up to install itself on any Windows system, and does NOT use or require the Internet and does not require any MLD (or other) software. |
After downloading, run the program, and fill out the profile to indicate your interests, which defines what other files will be downloaded. Make sure you press the SELECT ALL button to get ALL modules. You can get the protected files and grammar book by donating US$49 or more to the project. |
Note: the trial and the retail versions are identical except that the retail one includes more than 5000 images and more than 5000 sounds plus the hypertext grammar e-book. The software is identical. There are no 30-day limitations or other traps. There are no trojans, viruses, spyware, or adware. |
Also note: this is Windows software and has been tested on Windows 98, XP with service pack 3, Vista with service pack 2, and Windows 7 RC1. If you have not installed the service packs for your system, please run Windows Update first. The software does not use the Internet once it is installed, except for updates. And yes, it runs just fine on Windows 98 with 128MB memory so you can put it on an old machine. |
If you have a Mac or run Linux, I have been told that the software will run on BootCamp or Parallels (Mac) or WINE (Linux) but I have not tested it myself. Since the software is essentially free to try, do it and let me know how you make out. |

Before downloading Speak Easy Thai, you need to enter a valid e-mail address. We will send an e-mail to the address you provide. Once you receive the e-mail, click on the confirmation link and you will be directed to the donation page. To help fund this project, the trial download is no longer free; a minimum donation of US$2 (about Euro 1.25) is required. You can donate more if you wish. Donations of US$49 or more get all the protected images and sound files and the hypertext Thai grammar e-book. Why am I asking for donations? Click here for an explanation. (Opens in a new window.) To see screen shots of the software, go here. (Opens in a new window.) |
4MB |
The initial download is about 4MB; thereafter, the size of the download depends on which dictionaries you want. For Thai, English, and all the software plus basic images and sounds, you are looking at about 120 MB. If you donate to get the protected images, sound files, and Thai grammar e-book, that means an additional 175 MB. If you have a slow Internet connection, please order the CD-ROM. |

The Download Manager Setup installs the Visual Basic run-time files, if they are not already installed, and then installs and runs a Start-Up module, followed by the MLD Download Manager, which analyses your system, determines that everything is missing, and then shows you the list of things to be downloaded. You must first define a "profile", which indicates your interests (which languages and which software that you want). There is no personal information in your profile, other than your e-mail address: it's just a list of the languages you want and the functions you want (create and edit documents, learn the language, update a dictionary, etc.) You can define a schedule for the MLD Download Manager to automatically check and download updates. Since there are frequent updates, monthly updating is recommended. |
